Dear Friend of Casa San Jose,
We are beginning a new feature! Each week we will be sending out an “action
alert” with a suggestion of something concrete you can do to support our Latino
immigrant community, many of whom are now under threat of immediate
deportation.
This week we are working to stop PA Senate Bill 10 - the
Municipal Sanctuary and Federal Enforcement Act, or SAFE Act, sponsored by
Republican State Senator Reschenthaler.
This bars municipalities from adopting “sanctuary” policies that refuse
to comply with federal detention orders issued by Immigrations and Custom
Enforcement (ICE). Pittsburgh is one of municipalities that have enacted
these policies, and would then NOT receive any state grants (last year this amounted
to over $9.5 million.) It has passed
the State Senate but will still need to pass the House and get Governor Wolf’s
signature. Next week we’ll give you more
information on how to try to keep that from happening.
